ID31 - Tobago

ID31 - Tobago (31st August, 2007 – 10:45 a.m.)

Tobago again. Scott and Lesley, Xen and Sean, Tanya and I and some others.
We just came off the boat and settled in the rooms.

What have we learned so far;
1. When they say arrive two hours before, they really mean 15 min
2. Women aren’t as good with motion sickness as men (walk with gravol)
3. Tobagonians are very patriotic. I saw a woman with red eyebrows
4. Fast Food service in Tobago sucks. (We saw a KFC line extend outside)
5. Badman nuh Drive fass in Tobago
6. Sean and Xen can cut a seemingly endless container of pelau in half

ID31 - Tobago 1st September, 2007 – 1:15 a.m.)

There is lots of rain. ☹ We got washed out of the beach at “Stone Haven” and rain fell the entire time we were in “The Shade” (bar/club)

What have we learned in again???
1. Rain in Tobago sucks
2. You can get a pair of Ganja leaf pajamas for purchase in Tobago
3. It’s OK to wear a pair of Ganja leaf pajamas in “The Shade” in Tobago
4. Badman nuh dance in Tobago (except to Jr. Gong)
5. With all the rain that fell, “The Shade” should really be called “The Shelter”
6. Johno doing the “Willie Bounce” should really be called the “Hill Billy Bounce”
7. Sean thinks that “Ganja Leaf Pajamas” should be called “Ganjammaz”

ID31 - Tobago (1st September, 2007 – 12:15 p.m.)

We just came from Pennysavers, cause Scott needed more rum. This morning the weather forcast was cloudy and rainy. I hope it looks better. We were planning to go to Englishman’s Bay but I guess its not gonna happen.

These other observations came apparent to us;
1. Pennysavers is probably the only supermarket in Tobago
2. The rum is always gone
3. Rain gives you “itis”
4. Every stop could be a bar stop if you have one in your trunk
5. If Leslie asks you to ‘open the stove’, she really means to light it

ID31 - Tobago (1st September, 2007 – 6:37 a.m.)

I did say we wanted to go to Englishman’s Bay but there was too much rain. Well, we still went, and maybe we shouldn’t have. The beach was FILTHY. The water was brown, there was debris on the shore, the sky was grey and there were tree branches and leaves in the water. No problem. We figured that we drove for about a half hour and had to avoid several landslips trying to get here, we decided to look for adventure. We followed Sean across the river and over the hill to the next bay. It was the best! We hiked over the rocks and made it out to a stack. The water was much better. The filthy river wasn’t emptying into THAT bay.

We learned some valuable lessons on that trip:
1. When you get a bad feeling, go with it
2. Adventure is wherever you look for it
3. Xen isn’t as girly as Tanya after all
4. When waiting for debris from a land-slip to be moved from the road, pull up the hand brakes and grab a drink from the trunk.
5. Scott & Anderson can do an hour drive in 38 minutes
6. Leslie is pregnant
7. The rum is always gone
8. ‘Pegs’ is not an option in Tobago (unless you bring your own)

ID31 - Tobago (1st September, 2007 – 8:15 p.m.)

OK…
Some asshole just hit my car. I donno… we were eating and the host came and told us there was an accident outside. ☹ Apparently, this Sunny was reversing up the road and hit me in the back. The car was at least six feet further up from where I parked it. Xen and I are headed to the police station now.

ID31 - Tobago (1st September, 2007 – 10:37 p.m.)

Just came back form the police station. I was planning to take a snooze before SHADE again. Not Gonna Happen. ☹ The Funny thing was, Scott slept straight through the commotion. :S Apparently when I called him in the police station, he came running into Sean and Xen’s room shouting, “All yuh, Panda get inna accident!... wait nah, Sean, how you here here, Where Xen?” Any way, this is the 3rd time my car was hit while not moving. To make matters worse the driver was under 25, only driving for a year, he was driving a rental and didn’t have his license on him. Yeah! I’m that lucky.

Besides… Who reverses up an empty road and hits a car on the side of the road. I have seen my co-worker reverse straight up Grey Street, in traffic and turn on to Rust Street, still in reverse and straight into CMB parking lot without a problem. I think you know you hadda be a REAL shit hound if you hit a parked car while driving in reverse.

Well, now we know:
1. Policewomen in Tobago are dread
2. Tobagonians does drive like “YAI-YAN”

ID31 - Tobago (2nd September, 2007 – 1:05 a.m.)

The Shade rocks!!!
We passing home to get some swimming clothes to go and lime with Charise, Jonno, Che, Jana, Chris, etc. This is gonna be a long night. I hope we can wake up later. We going back to look for the crew there…

Through all the fun, we now know that:
1. When in Trinidad, Xen wants you to call him “ZEN” but when in Tobago, call him “SHADE”
2. On Saturday, The Shade gets full, so doh wear slippers
3. I don’t know half the new dance hall playing in clubs these days
4. Tanya gets “Tequila Goggles” that can make any Tobagonian look hot
5. Pole Dancing is customary in “The Shade”
6. It’s not unusual to see a fat girl pole dancing in “The Shade”

ID31 - Tobago (2nd September, 2007 – 2:20 a.m.)

Matthew got pick pocketed. I donno how the ass we ended back up in The Shade. We were looking for the crew who called and said they were still there. Matthew went to the bar and came back Vex. I had a bad feeling going back into the crowds.

What have we learnt now?
1. There are pickpockets in Tobago
2. Xen can’t look intimidating
3. The bouncer in The shade is big like all of us put together
4. When you get a bad feeling, trust it
5. Avoid “niggaz” at all costs

ID31 - Tobago (2nd September, 2007 – 4 something a.m.)

Sean rushes into my room saying, “Panda, Panda! We hadda go pick up Xen.” At this point I’m confused. Were is Xen? Sean replys, “In the Police Station!” Tanya giggles.

I’m sleepy

ID31 - Tobago (2nd September, 2007 – 1:47 p.m.)

It’s over, I guess. Despite all the mishaps we did have a lot of fun. ☺ We went to the beach one last time before the boat. Matthew was bitter all the way and Sean was teasing him right through.

The Questions

“Why they say never say never, when they know that ain't right? Cause to never say never you done said never twice” - Mos Def

Did you ever notice the vast amount of automated devices available for your usage in the average restroom? Last time I went to the restroom, I peed, and the urinal flushed itself. I went to wash my hands and the tap came on, on its own. Even the soap dispenser was automated. I went to dry my hands, the blower’s sensor detected me and came on automatically. After all this excellent technological display, I was very impressed for a short time. I had realized that I would trade it all for a BLOODY door with a handle I didn’t have to touch. Why is it that of all the things that you come in contact with in the restroom, the one thing that really needs to be automated, is the one thing that is not?

There was this one time I saw this guy, after doing “number 2” (I’m not sure if and how he wiped) totally bypass the fully automated self- hygiene setup, and used the same door to exit. Now maybe my immune system can handle the bit of germs I was going to come in contact with, but my stomach wasn’t.

“Why do I need I.D. to get I.D.? If I had I.D., I wouldn't need I.D....” - Mos Def

Places that actually say they intend to promote autonomy, creativity and individuality, have so many people looking the same? I didn’t realize that Clubs had a Uniform. Sorry, but my belt buckle isn’t big enough, my pants aren’t tight enough, my shoes aren’t square enough and I don’t have a piece of ruby quartz to cut into some sunglasses. If I’m comfortable with who I am now, why would I go somewhere to look like someone else?

“Cause you answer the phone "peace" do that mean that you not a freak? Cause you recognize me, yo, I got to speak?” – Common Sense

French fries are fried,… but you can also bake them. Bake is Baked,… but you can also fry them. Why is fried bake called “Fried Bake”, and baked fries not called “Baked Fries”?

A designer

Damn! I was reading this blog and then I realised, “this is gonna cause another serious entry in my blog!” so here it is. I am from today going to make a concerted effort to use my pencil more in my field of work. Design solutions are steadily being watered down because we jump to the computer too quickly, so this is my pledge:

The computer is only a tool.

I will not be enslaved to Photoshop and Illustrator.

I will not create a bad habit by throwing away a good one.

The tool that makes me a DESIGNER is not the computer.

It is my brain.

I will not rely on “INSPIRATION”

I will not rely on “INTUITION”

In other words, I will not rely on “LUCK”

I WILL enhance my process

I WILL upgrade my method

I WILL develop my ability of perception, application and idea generation.

I will remember my roots

I will refer to the principles and fundamentals that have enhance what I am today

I will trust in my ability more than in my computer

OK

That’s it for the serious entry. Go back to what ever you were surfing before and forget about this, unless you plan to be a serious designer like me.

I have a decision to make

I have a decision to make. It wouldn’t be easy. It can’t be undone. I’m not guaranteed happiness afterward and I may compromise a lot by making ANY decision.

I can’t ask for advice. Only I can decide. I must be rational, I must be selfish, and I must also be compassionate.

I have to be decisive. I have to be assertive. I can’t just weigh pros and cons. I can’t just balance my options. I can’t over react.

I have to think, I have to think quickly. I have to act. I have to act seriously. I have to choose. I have to choose carefully.
